Core Advantage: A 6% Molybdenum Super Austenitic Stainless Steel Engineered for Severely Corrosive Environments

254SMO is a high-alloy super austenitic stainless steel, originally developed and trademarked by Outokumpu, corresponding to UNS S31254 and EN 1.4547 standards. Its core characteristic lies in its approximately 6.1% molybdenum content, combined with 20% chromium, 18% nickel, and 0.2% nitrogen, achieving a Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PRE) value of ≥42.5 —far exceeding conventional austenitic stainless steels. This unique composition delivers exceptional resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking in halide-containing environments (especially chlorides). In certain applications, it can even serve as a cost-effective alternative to higher-cost nickel-based alloys and titanium.

We provide more than just steel pipes; we offer reliable assurance for your most extreme corrosive conditions.

Why Choose 254SMO Super Austenitic Stainless Steel Pipe?

1、Superior Pitting and Crevice Corrosion Resistance

254SMO achieves a PRE (Pitting Resistance Equivalent) value of ≥42.5, a key indicator of resistance to chloride-induced pitting. The synergistic effect of high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content provides pitting and crevice corrosion resistance several times higher than 316L in high-chloride environments like seawater. It can be exposed to seawater at 60°C for prolonged periods without suffering crevice corrosion.

2、Excellent Resistance to Stress Corrosion Cracking

Ordinary austenitic stainless steels (e.g., 304, 316) are prone to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in chloride-containing solutions above approximately 60°C. Due to its high nickel and molybdenum content, 254SMO offers extremely high resistance to chloride SCC, with accelerated tests showing failure times far exceeding alloys like 904L.

3、High Strength and Good Toughness

254SMO exhibits a minimum yield strength (Rp0.2) of ≥310 MPa and tensile strength of 655-850 MPa, roughly twice that of standard 300-series stainless steels. Its austenitic structure also provides excellent impact toughness at both room and cryogenic temperatures, meeting requirements down to -196°C.

4、Good Weldability

The very low carbon content (≤0.02%) effectively prevents carbide precipitation during welding, minimizing intergranular corrosion risk. Preheating and post-weld heat treatment are generally not required. However, matching nickel-based filler metals (e.g., ERNiCrMo-3 / Alloy 625) are essential to ensure the corrosion resistance of the weld area.

5、International Approvals and Broad Applications

The material is ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code approved and meets NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 requirements for sulfide stress cracking resistance in oilfield equipment. It also complies with NORSOK MDS standards, making it a specified material for marine engineering and oil & gas applications.
